Exploring the benefits of an MPA degree

Public service is a dynamic field. A Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree combines theory and real-world application to prepare professionals for work in the nonprofit or public sectors and allows graduates to develop the skills and knowledge to give back to their communities, improve their cities, and make a positive impact on policies and programs.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for graduates with expertise in management, finance, data analysis, project management, and public policy is projected to increase at nearly 6% from 2021 – 2031, faster than the average for all occupations.

Experience a comprehensive curriculum.

“The MPA program is often referred to as the MBA for individuals looking to make an impact on the public sector,” explains Agnes Herget, UIC Senior Director of Innovation and Online Program Development.

Students pursuing an MPA degree will experience a curriculum that combines traditional business and finance courses with public policy courses to prepare students to prepare students to take on leadership roles in their chosen fields. The multi-disciplinary nature of the degree means that students are equipped with skills and knowledge that prepare MPA graduates to take on leadership roles in government agencies, non-profit organizations, international organizations, consulting firms, and various sectors where public administration and policy expertise are valued. These skills include:

Professionals looking to make a commitment to public service and advancing in their career will benefit from pursuing an MPA degree.

Make real, positive change in a variety of fields.

“Being able to understand and work with diverse groups of people is the most important skill for a career in public administration, including the ability to understand the diverse needs of the public that are served by public sector organizations,” explains Dr. Allyson Holbrook, UIC Professor and MPA Program Director.

Previous studies in any field can benefit from earning an MPA degree. The MPA degree is a good fit for individuals who are interested in making a positive impact on society and want to be equipped with the skills to make informed policy decisions that can address complex societal challenges.
